Changing the query language of the People Search Results webpart to a language that is a lot different to ours (Greek vs Dutch) has improved our search results. This work-around does mean you don't use nicknames... A new update with more language files for the localised searches is available:

I’ve run into similar problems… Changing the query language of the People Search Results webpart to a language that is a lot different to ours (Greek vs Dutch) has improved our search results. This work-around does mean you don’t use nicknames…
